We hear from Robin Dundas, 2018 winner of the British Psychological Society’s Division of Counselling Psychology annual award for carer and service user involvement
Tell me about the first steps on your journey in psychology. I first became interested in psychology having dropped out of art school around the age of 21. At that time I knew a psychologist who worked in NHS services, and I remember hearing about his therapy approach and thinking that it was a little analytical and cold. I decided I wanted to combine my interests in humanism, Buddhism and philosophy with psychology, with a view to working in the NHS from a more relational, humanistic perspective. Looking back, I realise that my perspective had a lot to do with the arrogance of youth. Having said that, it feels good to reflect that this is exactly what I’ve done 20 years later – I think if my younger self saw me now, he’d be pretty happy about that....
